ronald reagan was one of those rare presidents who lifted our vision and enlarge our very conception of this nation and its mission on earth. his time will long glow in history and in memory. that was pretty high praise coming as it did from edward m. kennedy and while nobody could ever call ted a reagan democrat, he certainly knew the type and he knew that they don't like either party taking their votes for granted. the reagan democrats, many of you know, are still a mighty force in my state, and definitely across this country. otherwise i would not be here today as a proud successor of the late senator kennedy. so, i guess as you know there was a little bit of luck working for the last year, too. although when i got into the senate race, i'm sure it didn't look like i was a guy about to catch any breaks, as you all know. and after the passing of senator kennedy, most people thought that the special election would be decided in the democratic primary. simple as that. who wanted to be the sadsack republican who is going to take the fall in the general election? it was me.
